Suspension and Steering Services - additional information

Suspension Services

Your vehicle suspension wears out gradually, you may not notice any problems until the system fails. It's important to have your suspension system checked periodically to ensure your driving comfort and safety.

Steering and Suspension warning indicators:

  • Car is hard to steer.
  • Steering feels "loose"
  • Knocking sound when you turn the steering wheel or go over a bump
  • Car pulls to one side
  • Extra roll when you turn corners
  • Extra nose dive when stopping or squatting when accelerating
  • Car bounces a lot
  • Steering vibration

Expect to replace your shocks, struts and springs around every 80,000 km, although this can vary based on car type, driving style and driving conditions.  Our Federal Service Manager will work with you to advise you on the specifics for your vehicle.
At a minimum you should replace worn components in pairs - across the same axle.  It is highly recommended to replace all four sides at the same time.

Steering, suspension, wheel balance and alignment services are tightly interwoven. You should expect any suspension service to include an alignment service.  Properly working steering and suspension components, lead to longer tire life.  Our Service Manager will work with you to ensure that any service that is being done, takes into account impact on any additional components.

Power Steering Service

Power Steering Fluid Replacement Service:

Have a Power Steering service done every 60,000 km.

  • We will flush your current fluid with specialized equipment and replace with new Steering Fluid.
  • We inspect your full steering systems for signs of failure or damage in any of the other components.
  • Many power steering problems center around power steering fluid.
  • Over time, the seals, O-rings and internal power-steering components will wear out. When they break apart, they contaminate the power steering fluid, which forces the power steering pump to work harder and eventually break down.
  • Water accumulates in power steering fluid and can cause corrosion that leads to leaks.  Low fluid means rough steering. Power steering hoses can deteriorate from the inside. Bits of hose can clog fluid passages, interfering with smooth steering.

Signs that you need a Power Steering Service:

  • Topping up power steering fluid often (signs of a leak).
  • Finding Steering fluid on your driveway or discovering signs of a leak with inspection.
  • Hearing a whine after a cold start.
  • Choppy or sloppy steering
