More about tyre wear, alignment and balance.

Tyre type

There are many different tyre brands and types on the market.  Selecting the right tyre can seem intimidating. Do you select a softer compound tyre for performance and comfort, but give up longevity?  Do you select a high performance, low profile tyre and sacrifice comfort?  Do you drive an off road tyre on the roads the majority of time?

Work with your Federal Service Manager to select the right tyre for your driving needs.  Some typical characteristics to look out for:

  • Soft or hard compound (long lasting)
  • Comfort or performance
  • Wet traction
  • Handling
  • Road noise
  • Highway vs all-terrain vs mud
  • Cost

Maintain recommended tyre pressure

Maintain tyre pressure as recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer - NOT the tyre manufacturer.

Proper tyre pressure will not only prolong the life of your tyres, but will improve fuel economy and  traction control.  A single tyre constantly loosing pressure over time indicates a slow leak that should be investigated.

Regular inspections

Regular inspections can provide early indicators, like improper tyre wear, before they become more expensive issues.

Tread depth.

Almost all tyres have a tread wear indicator at approximately 1.6mm.  This is the absolute minimum depth, both practically and legally.

Recommended tyre replacement should occur between 1.6mm and 3.2mm of tread depth. (Use a TT 25c coin to measure your tread depth at the most worn part of the tread.  If you can read the word "Cents" at the bottom - with the coin straight up, you are below 3mm and your tyres need replacing).

As you tyre start's to wear below 3.2 mm, you will find your vehicle starts to become less responsive.  It is especially pronounced and dangerous in wet conditions.  Braking distance is significantly compromised

How often should I perform a balance and alignment?

Wheel Balancing:

  • Planned - Every 10,000 km
  • As needed - Vibration is steering wheel, or in your seat, or both
  • Every time you service or replace your tyres.

Wheel Rotation:

  • Every 10,000 km. (do this at the same time you are in for every second oil change)

Wheel Alignment:

  • Planned - Every 10,000 km
  • As Needed - car is pulling to one side
  • Whenever you replace your tyres.

Tyre Replacement:

  • Planned - typically between 4-5 years.  Between 100,000 km - 160,000 km - depends on tyre type, vehicle and driving habits
  • As needed - Tyre damage that is unrepairable. Tyre worn below safe tread depth.

Tyre Inspection:

  • Check for tyre wear, damage, pressure and tread depth.
  • Every time your car is in for service.
  • This is included as part of the Federal Advantage free service whenever you have your car serviced with us.,
